Quick answer: Choose the GEL-Kayano if you have flat feet, your feet roll inward when you walk or run (overpronation), or your old shoes wear down on the inside edge. It adds soft support that keeps your foot steady. Choose the GEL-Nimbus if you have a neutral stride or high arches and want the softest, most cushioned ride ASICS makes. Both use ASICS' FF BLAST™ PLUS foam and PureGEL™ in the heel, so both feel plush. The difference is support, not comfort.
Still not sure? If you've never had foot pain and your shoes wear evenly, start with the Nimbus. If you have flat feet or have been told you overpronate, start with the Kayano. Both are also great for walking and long days on your feet.
| Feature | GEL-KAYANO™ (Stability) | GEL-NIMBUS™ (Neutral) | What It Means for You |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built For | Support for feet that roll in | Max neutral cushion | Kayano helps if your feet roll inward. Nimbus suits a neutral stride. |
| Support Tech | 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM™ | None (neutral, wide base) | Kayano adds soft support that kicks in when your foot rolls in. |
| Midsole Foam | FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO | FF BLAST™ PLUS ECO | Nimbus usually feels a bit softer and sits a bit higher. |
| Heel Cushioning | Rearfoot PureGEL™ | Rearfoot PureGEL™ | Same soft gel in the heel of both. |
| Heel-Toe Drop | About 10mm | About 8mm | Kayano's higher heel can ease strain on your calves. |
| Best For | Flat feet, overpronation, long runs | High arches, neutral stride, recovery days | Pick by foot type, not by softness alone. |
The GEL-Kayano is ASICS' top stability running shoe. Older stability shoes used a hard plastic or firm foam post on the inside of the sole. Recent Kayanos use the 4D GUIDANCE SYSTEM™ instead.
Here's how it works. A softer section of foam sits on the inner side of the midsole. When your foot starts to roll in too far, that section compresses and pushes back gently, guiding your foot back into line. Most of the time, the shoe feels neutral and soft. The support only kicks in when you need it. That makes the Kayano a great choice for flat feet and low arches.
Not anymore. The newest Kayanos prove a support shoe can still feel soft.
JD Expert Question: "Do the Kayano and Nimbus feel different underfoot, and does the Kayano's higher heel help heavy heel strikers?"
JD Expert Answer: Both shoes use the same family of foam, so step-in comfort is close. The Kayano feels a little firmer and steadier through the middle, because it's built to keep your foot from rolling in. Its higher heel drop can also take some strain off your calves and Achilles, which many heel strikers like. The Nimbus feels a touch softer and more free. It lets your foot move naturally, so it works best if your stride is already steady on its own.
The GEL-Nimbus is ASICS' most cushioned neutral running shoe. It's made for runners with a neutral stride or high arches, and for anyone whose feet roll slightly outward.
Without stability features, ASICS can pack in more soft foam. The Nimbus has a tall, plush sole and a gentle rocker shape that helps you roll smoothly onto your toes. The result is a soft, easy ride for long runs, recovery days, and long walks. If you have high arches and want your shoe to soak up as much impact as possible, this is the one.
